Hearthstone started off as an ad for World of Warcraft and now it’s completely eclipsed the game it spawned from. Blizzard just announced that their card game has reached 50 million registered players around the world. In February, Blizzard said that there were only 40 million players, which is quite a large growth spurt in just a few weeks. World of Warcraft is currently sitting at 5.5 million active users, down from their peak of 10 million in 2010.

With Hearthstone’s new expansion out, Whispers of the Old Gods, the entire game has changed. Old cards have been rotated out in a format change and newer, crazier cards have come out to replace them. The set has only been out a day and players are coming up with some really cool and unique deck ideas .

With Overwatch coming out next month, Blizzard is riding a wave of success. Hearthstone will continue to rise in popularity and evolve with its player base (as long as Mysterious Challenger stays dead.)
