You need to find a shield that you don’t care about losing, since shield surfing will wear down your shield’s durability and eventually destroy it. If you’re just starting Breath of the Wild, a basic and plentiful shield like a Boko Shield is a good idea. Get one by looting a monster’s corpse, purchasing one or finding one out in the world.
Equip the shield and hold it in guard mode with ZL as if blocking an attack or locking onto an enemy. Jump with X and then press A and Link will slam his shield beneath him and start surfing. If you’re going downhill, you’ll go faster, but you can do this anywhere in the world.
You can also pull out your bow and arrow and shoot your arrows as you surf on by. Be careful when your shield breaks: you can actually wipe out so bad, you die, bro.
Shield-surfing works on grassy areas as well as snow, but avoid rocky ground as it will deplete your shield’s durability rapidly. If you hit Y, you can perform a 1080 degree spin on your shield, while hitting X and tilting the left control stick sideways lets you perform tricks.
