In an interview with Vulture, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked Infinity War and everything that comes next.
"Particularly in Infinity War and the movie after that," Feige said, "there are … unexpected team-ups."
Infinity War and its subsequent film may include over 60 characters, providing plenty of opportunities for surprising meet-ups between MCU characters. But which two characters is Feige most looking forward to seeing share the screen?
"There are so many," Feige said, "but I would say, both because of the characters and the actors who've created them, Doctor Strange and Tony Stark." (Holmes on Holmes action? Somewhere in the wild yonder of fandom, someone’s ears have just perked up.)
After the Infinity War crossover event, Feige hopes for “more intimate movies” or “more interesting, unexpected combinations of characters.” He explained, "It never is intentionally about 'being even bigger’... To us, it's less about continuing to go bigger with spectacle — although in some cases, we will — and more about continuing to go deeper with those character interactions."
Feige pointed to Captain America: Civil War’s climactic airport fight scene as an example of how investment in characters, even many characters, can produce an emotional result: “There weren't world-ending stakes in that scene, there wasn't an asteroid smashing into a city in that scene, but there was a conflict between the characters that made you feel something,” said Feige.
In a separate interview, Feige said, “It's very important to us that all of our heroes do not become silhouette-perfect cutout icons. All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them.” It’s perhaps this more than anything that will decide whether or not Marvel gets to tell those “intimate” stories Feige is aiming for.
Do you think Marvel will be able to go smaller in its movies, or is the lure of superhero spectacle just too much to overcome? Feel free to talk about Marvel Studios and its upcoming Infinity War movie in our comments section below.
