Director Matt Reeves confirmed on Twitter that actor Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Jim Gordon in The Batman. For the uninitiated, the actor is best known for his role on the hit HBO series Westworld.
Wright has long been rumored for the role. In fact, he has been the go-to topic of many internet and industry trade rumors. Well, looks like the filmmaker could not take it any longer, confirming in a tweet that Wright will indeed be the next commissioner in the movie.
The Westworld actor will be joining Robert Pattinson, who will play Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Zoë Kravitz, who will play Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Several prominent Batman villains have been rumored to serve as antagonists in the film, with The Penguin and Riddler on top of the list.
Gary Oldman portrayed Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s critically-acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy. J.K. Simmons, on the other hand, portrayed the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, set in Warner Bros.’ shared DC Extended Universe. In there, Simmons appeared alongside Ben Affleck's Batfleck.
“The Batman will explore a detective case — when people start dying in strange ways, Batman must go deep into the dark world of Gotham to find clues and solve the mystery/conspiracy connected to Gotham City’s history and criminals,” the plot details that surfaced over the summer say. “In the film, all of Batman’s Rogues Gallery are already out there and active, similar to the comics and animated shows/movies. The film will have multiple villains, as they are all suspects.”
Reeves seems to be wanting to explore the detective side of Batman, something that the recent films have not really tried to explore. Perhaps the director’s dilemma here is how to bring the movie across to its fans without the need to strain themselves after being able to recognize most of the villains included. If the film turns out to be a success, Reeves is believed to spearhead a trilogy of films.
