Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence may be known more for her acting chops, but the 25-year-old actress remained behind the scenes for her latest project, A Beautiful Planet. The IMAX documentary, which debuted on Saturday at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, is narrated by Lawrence and provides unique information about Earth’s climate change process, all while showcasing stunning imagery of our planet from the International Space Station.
The version of A Beautiful Planet screened at SXSW was still a “work-in-progress,” but you’d be hard-pressed to believe that upon viewing. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and immersive thanks to the powerful technology of the IMAX theater. It doesn’t hurt that A Beautiful Planet was made in cooperation with NASA.
The 40 minute film shifts back and forth between awe-inspiring footage of planet Earth and the ISS - plus the astronauts who inhabit the station. Stationed on the orbiting body, several scientists and engineers from various nations detail their day-to-day activities. It’s an insightful look into the daily routine and challenges of being an astronaut.
As Lawrence narrates A Beautiful Planet, she makes note to highlight the devastating impact humanity can have on Earth when not careful. From space you can see barren land in Brazil, where luscious rainforests once flourished, or the polluted canals of the Ganges Delta in India. It’s clear that the overarching theme of the film is to unite world citizens to protect and conserve this beautiful planet we live on.
In addition to Lawrence’s narration, A Beautiful Planet was produced and directed by Toni Myers. A completed version of the film will officially release on April 29 in IMAX and IMAX 3D theaters. Stay tuned to iDigitalTimes for continuing coverage of SXSW 2016.
