Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 officially become single-player only games on March 29, 2018. This information comes from a post on the official Guerrilla Games website.
Both games are PS3 exclusives and Killzone 2 will be more than nine-years-old once shut down, while Killzone 3 will be more than seven-years-old. Both games will still be playable in single-player after the servers shut down, but any online functionality will be cut off.
“As we near the end of the online lifecycle for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, we’d like to express how grateful we are for all the support and feedback we’ve received from the community over the last eight years,” the announcement reads. “Your enthusiasm is what drove us to hone our craft and grow as a studio. We hope you enjoyed playing Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 online as much as we did creating them.”
Guerrilla Games went on to make another sequel, 2013’s Killzone Shadow Fall on PS4, RIGS Mechanized Combat League for PSVR and the Game of the Year contender Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s unknown what the developer will work on next once all the Horizon Zero Dawn DLC is released, but given the success of the open-world post-apocalyptic adventure game, it’s likely we’ll see more Horizon in the future.
Does this shuttering of servers mean the Killzone franchise is officially dead? I doubt it. Sony has managed to treat Destiny like a first-party exclusive that happens to also release on other consoles for a while, but will probably want a true PlayStation-exclusive first-person shooter again in the future. It wouldn’t shock me to see Sony pick Killzone back up not only for the nostalgia, but also because it’s an established world that will take less time to develop than something completely new.
So what do you think? Do you want to see a new Killzone game? Will you dust off your PS3 one last time before March 29? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
