Kingdom Hearts 3 reveals are seemingly being teased via the series’ official U.S. Twitter account. Just hours ago, a tweet was dispatched implying that fans should get excited for potential Kingdom Hearts 3 details.
The tweet, posted late Thursday evening, contains a subtweet from the official Disney D23 Twitter account in relation to D23 Japan that reads “the excitement starts now.” The Kingdom Hearts account didn’t add any words to the message, but it did tack on a few emojis: one for a crown, a red heart and three blue hearts. Given the slight teases we’ve already seen, and the fact that this post comes from a typically silent official source, the assumption is that big news is on the way.
If Kingdom Hearts 3 news is truly near, it’ll likely arrive during the Kingdom Hearts fan event set to take place between 2 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. EST on Feb. 11. No link to a livestream has been posted yet, and all tickets were awarded to attendees via a lottery system. While there were some passing concerns any new footage would be shown behind closed doors, the fact that an English account is tweeting about it implies translations will eventually be available. Clips may not be posted simultaneously with the event, but it seems likely they’ll be released at some point.
As a major Disney-centric property, Kingdom Hearts 3 has an extensive history with D23 conventions across the U.S. and Japan. In the fall of 2013, D23 Japan was the site of an exclusive Kingdom Hearts 3 tech demo that offered a first glimpse at the title’s gameplay. That trend continued in 2015 with a privately viewed trailer. In The U.S. a Big Hero 6 world concept was announced in 2015, while the Toy Story world made its infamous debut last year. In other words, while Kingdom Hearts 3 hasn’t been shown at D23 every single year of its extensive development cycle, Disney likes providing updates for its passionate fan base as often as possible.
With only a few days to go until the presentation begins, however, it’s important for all fans to keep their expectations in check. Partially substantiated rumors suggest a new world and gameplay trailer will be part of the festivities, but there are many different forms and scales for a Kingdom Hearts 3 reveal to take shape. Showing off new footage is usually the best way to generate hype, but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility for the new info to be lore-based as well. In March of last year, series cast members took the stage during the Kingdom Hearts orchestra tour to recite spoken dialogue relevant to the game’s story. That’s not as exciting as a new world, obviously, but there’s precedent for something like that to happen during a longer show. Square Enix sometimes revels in surprising fans using unconventional means.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is slated for a 2018 release on PS4 and Xbox One.
