COVID-19 may be a problem for several major industries, however, the gaming industry hasn't been that badly affected, at least not in the sales department. More people stuck at home means more people buying games. According to the NPD Group, sales in June were higher than ever. We saw a 26 percent increase in sales related to hardware, software, and accessories compared to last year.
NPD also released the list of best-selling games of June, and unsurprisingly, The Last of Us Part 2 is on top. The title is the second-biggest Sony launch of all time, just after 2018’s Marvel's Spider-Man. TLOU2 is also the third best-selling game of this year, which is impressive because it’s only been a month since its launch and it is a PS4 exclusive. We expect it to climb the chart even further after some time.
What did catch my eye was that GTA 5 is currently standing as the fifth best-selling game of 2020, and that’s after the fact that the game was free-to-keep on the Epic Games Store for one week. A seven-year-old title is still making a dent in NPD charts.
