It’s been decided! Out of the 15 nominated video games inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, six have been inducted.
The Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Grand Theft Auto 3, Space Invaders, The Sims and The Oregon Trail are the six games immortalized at The Strong in Rochester, New York.
The Strong National Museum of Play, where the Hall of Fame is located, held a ceremony for the six inducted games on May 5. The inductees were selected by a committee of journalists, scholars and video game industry members.
Inductees into the World Video Game Hall of Fame are recognized for their iconic status, longevity, geographical reach and influence.
"These 15 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists span decades, gaming platforms and countries of origin--but what they all have in common is their undeniable impact on the world of gaming and popular culture," the Strong Museum’s director Jon Paul-C Dyson said when the nominated games were revealed back in March.
What may be as or even more interesting are the games that didn’t make the class of 2016. Some notable games are John Madden Football, which revolutionized the sports simulator, Final Fantasy, and Tomb Raider and Pokemon who are both celebrating 20 years in its franchise.
