Even before its official launch, many projected that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would be a successful game. It turned out that it was even more of a hit than what was expected. That's because within three days since launch, the game has sold over 10 million units worldwide. This makes it the fastest-selling game in The Legend of Zelda franchise.
In addition, 4 million of those were sold in the Americas. This means that it's not only the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game but also the fastest-selling Nintendo game for any system in the Americas.
In a statement, Devon Pritchard at Nintendo of America shared that with the record-breaking game launch for Nintendo Switch, they're excited to see what players will create and what stories they'll be sharing. He added that they're thankful to the fans for the passion they've shown for the franchise, and the sales numbers for this newest title shows a strong momentum for the series and console.
The action-adventure series had its start more than 35 years ago with The Legend of Zelda game, which officially debuted in the U.S. for the first time on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. Players take on the role of Link and go on an adventure fighting enemies and uncovering hidden mysteries in fields and dungeons. As of March 2023, more than 130 million units of the franchise have been sold.
