Bravo, Nickelodeon, bravo. After delighting 90s kids everywhere with the announcement of a new Nicktoons movie , the television network has unveiled yet another brilliant surprise. Legends of the Hidden Temple, the greatest game show of all-time (lol), is coming back in the form of a fictional TV movie, reported Variety .
Legends of the Hidden Temple , which aired on Nickelodeon from 1996 to 2004, pitted teams against each other in challenges of skill and wits before undergoing a final race through the Hidden Temple, aided by guide/narrator, Olmec - a giant talking head statue. Will the Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots or Silver Snakes make appearances in the new film? Here’s everything we know about the Legends of the Hidden Temple movie:
The Legends of the Hidden Temple film will be live-action. This may seem obvious, given LotHT was essentially a reality show, but remember that it's home was basically a cartoon channel.
The plot is pretty intense. If you’re a 90s kid, then watching Legends of the Hidden Temple was certainly nerve-wracking. The movie will take on an even more serious tone. “In ‘Hidden Temple,’ three siblings must conquer a series of obstacles to remain alive, mirroring the theme of the original game show,” said Variety. The key word there is “alive.” The new movie will literally be a matter of life and death.
The film comes out sometime in autumn or winter 2016. Reports confirm that Legends of the Hidden Temple will arrive on television “in the fourth quarter of 2016.”
Olmec, the team animals, and more will return. Expect appearances from the famed talking head, as well as cameos from a green monkey, red jaguar and silver snakes, among others. Also, the Steps of Knowledge - the entrance to the temple - will be included as well.
Isabela Moner will star. The 14-year-old actress is known for her role in Nick’s 100 Things to Do Before High School.
Joe Menendez will direct. He’s previously helmed episodes of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, East Los High and Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.
BONUS: Hey Arnold! is returning as well. Buried within Variety’s lede is some other amazing news - a two-part TV movie based on Hey Arnold! are slated to appear sometime in 2017.
