Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2 has recruited Matt Angel (Grimm) to portray George Lucas in episode 9, “Raiders of the Lost Art.” Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly a time aberration causes Lucas to drop out of film school, which means he never went on to make classic films like Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
We should have seen this coming, considering the title of the episode and the fact that the long-lost Rip Hunter has been found in 1967 Los Angeles working on a sci-fi film. 1967 is in fact the year Lucas graduated from University of Southern California and re-enrolled as a grad student. If Lucas had dropped out, that would also mean he never met Indiana Jones co-collaborator Steven Spielberg. As it turns out, the change in Lucas’ past has negative effects on the Legends, particularly Ray and Nate, who were inspired by Lucas to pursue their respective fields in history and science.
“Because of circumstances, the time aberration in episode 209 is George Lucas quits film school,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim explained. “As a result, he never makes Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark . As a result, Ray, who became an engineer because of Star Wars , and Nate, who became a historian because of Raiders , slowly start to lose their brilliance, because those things that inspired them to become who they are didn’t exist.”
Guggenheim added episode 9 has a different flavor than those from earlier in the season, and expects fans to laugh out loud watching Nate and Ray deal with the loss of their idol.
“We were watching a cut of it, and I said to Greg [Berlanti] that 209 is either going to be the episode where we’ll say that the show found a new gear in terms of how zany it can be, or it’s the episode that’s going to get us all fired,” he joked. “It really is. You’re laughing out loud, I think with it, but it’s like, ‘Are we really doing this?’ It’s the ’70s bar fight on steroids. The whole episode is that level of crazy.”
Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 continues on a new night. Episode 9, “Raiders of the Lost Art,” airs Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 9 p.m. after The Flash.
