The PS4 and Xbox One consoles have hardly aged, but developer Avalanche Studios is already looking forward to what is coming next. Based on two job listings found on the developer’s site, Avalanche has plans for a yet-to-be-announced “next generation” game.
The two job postings in question are for a technical director of multiplayer and a senior multiplayer programmer. The majority of both listings are very similar, and both use the same language regarding a next generation multiplayer game.
“Avalanche Studios is currently looking for a senior programmer to lead the development of our next generation open world / sandbox multiplayer engine,” the technical director post reads. “This is a rare opportunity for the candidate who wants to play an instrumental and leading role in a small team developing next-generation multiplayer experience.
“This is a rare opportunity for the candidate who wants to play an instrumental and leading role in a team developing cutting edge multiplayer experiences. If you are a person who likes being challenged and stimulated in an ambitious and talented environment this position will suit you perfectly. Avalanche Studios is developing for both current and next gen platforms.”
All that is known about this game from the job listing is that it will be a multiplayer experience, probably open-world, for PC, current-gen and next-gen consoles. There will also be matchmaking, lobbies and friends lists, like many other online multiplayer games.
This isn’t the first time a developer has mentioned a game coming to a next-gen console. Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy XV, told DualShockers that whatever his team is working on after Final Fantasy XV, it’ll be coming to the next generation of consoles. “ As for future projects with our team, we are looking at the next generation and not the current generation of consoles and systems,” he said.
Is it too soon to be talking about new consoles from Sony and Microsoft? The PS2 entered the market in 2000 and dominated until the PS3 released in 2006. Meanwhile, the PS4 and Xbox One both released in 2013 and will turn four-years-old this November. It is not clear whether the latest 4K-ready PS4 Pro and Xbox One X will push back the next-gen consoles, but according to rumors from earlier this year, speculators predict the PlayStation 5 may arrive by 2019 or 2020.
There are similar timelines on the Xbox side as well and a Microsoft insider has revealed development on the Xbox One X successor is already underway.
So what do you think? Are you surprised by the talks of next generation consoles already? What would you like to see from a PS4 or Xbox One successor? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
