Publisher Square Enix and developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have just unveiled a new story trailer, new gameplay trailer, and additional gameplay footage of the upcoming action-adventure superhero title Marvel’s Avengers. This was all showcased during its first “War Table” live stream held on June 24.
First off, the story trailers tell what fans should expect story-wise from Marvel’s Avengers. In the video titled “The MODOK Threat”, the game’s main villain is introduced who is (surprise, surprise) MODOK, which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. MODOK is also the brains behind the evil corporation AIM, which stands for Advanced Idea Mechanics. From the snippets of voice lines, we can assume a sort of plot wherein the Avengers will be shunned and anyone with superpowers is hunted down, which will ultimately lead to their redemption arc, culminating in the superhero team saving the world. That’s just me guessing, though.
A game mode called Co-op War Zones has also been unveiled. It showcases the different heroes with multiple ways of customizing them from armor to weapons. Right now, I’m assuming that a multiplayer campaign mode is out of the question. Instead, a co-op gauntlet/survival mode is what War Zones is, taking levels from the main story mode for groups of players to beat. I hope I’m proven wrong though, since a co-op campaign seems like a very fun idea.
Lastly, the gameplay video titled “Once an Avenger” was also shown, starring the god of thunder himself, Thor. As expected, most of the trailer shows off the combat and showcases a larger than expected roster of moves that Thor has. He has melee moves with Mjolnir that involves smashing, spinning and throwing the hammer. Ranged moves include lightning strikes, leaping attacks, and what looked like a laser-guided lightning move (he flies and shoots out electricity from his hammer, which is then followed by a lightning strike where he is pointing). It is very flashy, but seems to lack a bit of oomph factor mainly from the lack of audio feedback. Hopefully in the final version of the game, we get the audio and visual combat feedback that Thor deserves.
Marvel’s Avengers is set to launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on September 4. It will also be available for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
