Entertainment Weekly has an “exclusive first look” at Marvel’s crossover Netflix show, The Defenders , which unites Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Of nine exclusive photos, three have Krysten Ritter of Jessica Jones . Of those three, two feature the infamous ass pose, with Jessica Jones looking over her shoulder instead of facing the camera. That way you can see her butt.
On Thursday a study of women in the film industry revealed that female participation in behind-the-camera roles actually declined in 2016. Women in the film industry are now about as well-represented as they were in 1998. Deadline summarized the study’s abysmal conclusion:
“Women comprised only 17% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top 250 domestic grossing films last year.”
With only 13% of writers, 7% of directors and 5% of cinematographers women, the butt shot probably isn’t going anywhere.
In light of these statistics, the constant promises of reform from studio heads like Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios look more and more like lip service. The butt shot is just the most obvious and repetitious example of an endemic problem in our pop culture.
