On the heels of Netflix’s Italian-style teaser for Master of None Season 2, the first official trailer for the sophomore season of Aziz Ansari’s Emmy-winning comedy gives us a few more clues about what to expect from upcoming episodes, and we’re breaking it all down. But does the world really need another John Legend cameo?
We’ve known since last summer that some portion of Master of None’s second season would take place in Italy, likely the northern culinary destination of Modena, where Dev (Ansari) heads after his sudden breakup with his girlfriend Rachel (Noël Wells). This new Season 2 trailer gives us a better sense of how that will fit in with the existing texture of the show fans know and love. In other words; don’t worry, Aziz hasn’t gone all Anthony Bourdain on us. Upcoming episodes of Master of None will still be predominantly set in New York, which means all the stellar supporting cast will likely return.
The official summary from Netflix reads as follows: “After traveling abroad, Dev returns to New York to take on challenges in his personal and family life, a new career opportunity, and a complex, developing relationship with someone very meaningful to him.” Check out the trailer below:
We open with some mellow, reflective and even wistful Italian music, intercut with footage of Dev getting ready for a night out in his New York apartment. These first few moments suggest that rather than having whole episodes set in Italy, that the season will repeatedly flash back to Dev and Arnold’s (Eric Wareheim) adventures abroad.
Our latest look at Master of None Season 2 doesn’t offer many specifics about the challenges and complexities ahead for Dev, we do know one thing -- his parents are back! (Yay!) And John Legend is there for some reason, apparently because he must appear in every piece of filmed entertainment in the known universe. (We get it, he’s very likeable and talented.)
Judging from a date montage at around the 20-second mark, it seems as though Dev will get back into the romance game, but it doesn’t seem like he meets anyone who knocks his socks off right away. There’s some discouraged couch-flopping after some blah evenings with interchangeable ladies and interchangeable wine. It wouldn’t surprise us at all if the upcoming episodes take some cues from Ansari’s bestselling book, Modern Romance.
Even so, it definitely seems like Dev is enjoying time with his friends along the way -- look at that flying leap into Arnold’s arms! There’s scenes clearly set during summer in New York, and that means roof bars and BBQ. Like Master of None Season 1, it looks as though there’ll be plenty of boozing in store.
Despite the warm-weather vibe of much of the trailer, it’s worth noticing when Dev is dancing with a pretty girl in a button down in his apartment (a new girlfriend?), there’s snow in the windows. Will he be in love again by the holiday season? How does it all fit together? And how much of John Legend do we have to endure?
Master of None Season 2 debuts on Netflix May 12.
