We’ve already met Dev’s parents on Master of None, and soon we’ll be meeting Denise’s mom. While walking the Emmy red carpet, Angela Bassett confirmed she would appear in Season 2 of Aziz Ansari’s Emmy-winning Netflix comedy.
Bassett, best known for her roles in American Horror Story, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and dozens of other television series and films, spoke to TV Guide about meeting with Ansari and plans for the character.
“His best friend... I’ll be playing her mom,” Bassett revealed. “It’s gonna span time, decades, we’ll do flashbacks. I hope she’s a cool, hip mom.”
On Master of None, Dev’s two best friends are Arnold (Eric Wareheim) and Denise (Lena Waithe); we can reasonably assume Bassett will play Denise’s mom. Dev’s blunt lesbian bestie became a fan favorite after Season 1, and it’s great to hear Waithe will be getting more screen time in the role that was tailor-made for her during the series’ sophomore year.
At this point, it’s not clear how many episodes of Master of None Bassett will appear in (especially given that we know at least part of Season 2 will take place in Italy), though she did hint at a somewhat complicated story for her character, laughing and saying, “I think… well, she has a lot to learn. Yeah, she’ll learn a lot.”
There’s not yet a release date for Season 2 of Master of None, but you can watch Season 1 in its entirety on Netflix.
