Super Mario Maker is still popular on sites like the /r/gaming subreddit, with gifs and videos frequently getting thousands of views. With that in mind, fans have decided to make a similar experience based on Mega Man.
Called Mega Maker, the game allows players to create their own Mega Man levels. Like Mario Maker, Mega Maker also allows players to mix items and characters from different games, using assets from Mega Man 1 to Mega Man 6. There are even 12 different bosses to include in levels.
“The game has been in development since September 2016, starting out as a one-person project but gradually becoming larger and larger. It is built using the Mega Engine, a Mega Man engine for Game Maker created by WreckingPrograms (the same guy that started Mega Maker),” the developer posted on the Mega Maker site. “Even after the initial release, development on this game will not yet be finished. Aside from any bug patches, we plan to include more content down the road, like assets from Mega Man 7 onward as well as entirely new features. Stay tuned!”
Just like Mario Maker, players can create levels to share with other gamers. To support this, WreckingPrograms has set up a server for hosting. If you would like to help support the server’s operating costs, a Patreon has been set up. There is also an official Discord if you want to talk to the developers directly.
Seeing as how this is a fan-made game, it’s likely only a matter of time until Capcom steps in and shuts the whole project down. Hopefully this can slip by before the lawyers come with the cease and desist letters. The countdown timer on the game’s website lists a release of Saturday, July 15. Once released, Mega Maker will be free to download for PC on the game’s website.
