The next entry in the Metro series was unveiled on Sunday, during Microsoft’s annual E3 Press Briefing, and it looks like everything we know about the franchise -- from the game’s structure to the state of the world -- will change when Metro Exodus heads to Xbox One and Windows 10.
There’s still a ton we don’t know. We don’t know why Artyom (who will return as protagonist for the next chapter of the Metro series) and his neighbors have been forced out of the Moscow subways. Nor do we know how the surface has become a semi-habitable environment again. But we’re going to get a much bigger look at the the Russian wasteland when Metro Exodus heads to PC and console(s?). 4A and Deep Silver say the next game in the series will finally ditch the linear level design of the previous Metro titles in favor of an “immersive, sandbox survival experience” that lets players explore a large swath of the Russian countryside.
Here’s the official description, via the first Metro Exodus press release:
In Metro Exodus, Artyom and a band of survivors must flee the shattered ruins of the Moscow Metro and embark on an epic, continent-spanning journey across the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness. Explore vast, non-linear levels, lose yourself in an immersive, sandbox survival experience, and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year in the greatest Metro adventure yet.
Artyom won’t be the only semi-familiar face returning in Metro Exodus. Several creatures seen in previous Metro games were shown in the first Exodus gameplay demonstration. It’s also probably safe to assume the next chapter will treat Metro: Last Light ’s Redemption ending as canonical, given that Artyom is returning as the protagonist and not filling a grave somewhere on the surface. We don’t know if another bunch of Dark Ones will play a role in the game. But there will be other new faces, like the gargantuan, heavily-mutated bear shown during Microsoft’s E3 Briefing. Additional information is scarce. But we’re definitely hoping to learn more when E3 2017 kicks off on Tuesday.
