Microsoft shocked the entire gaming community earlier this week by announcing its acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Games. Fans might already be aware that Bethesda is known for developing some remarkable video game franchises like Doom, Wolfenstein, The Elder Scrolls, Quake, Fallout, Starfield, and more.
With the acquisition of Bethesda Games, Microsoft has also acquired all smaller studios under Bethesda, including id Software, Arkane, ZeniMax Online Studios, MachineGames, Tango GameWorks, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog. All of these mentioned studios have played their part in Bethesda's major game releases.
Microsoft's Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, also shared that he discussed with Bethesda leaders as to what they think the future of gaming is going to be. It was the shared belief of both companies that led Xbox to purchase the studio. Moreover, if fans aren't aware, Bethesda was among one of the early supporters for Xbox Game Pass. With the acquisition of the studio, fans can expect more games from Bethesda appearing on the subscription service. There's also a high chance that these games will be a mainstay on the service as Bethesda is now a first-party studio for Xbox. This also means that future Bethesda games like Starfield and The Elder Scroll 6 will be available at launch on Xbox Game Pass.
The acquisition of Bethesda Games is a huge purchase for Microsoft, which now has the potential of changing the future of Xbox games. The number one reason why players choose to go with the PlayStation instead of Xbox is due to the lack of exclusive games on Microsoft's console. If Xbox chooses, this may no longer be the case. Fans will be excited to know that the smaller studios under Bethesda Games are already working on a number of projects, including a next-generation version of Fable by Playground Games. Obsidian Entertainment is also said to be working on several projects. All in all, this has been a good day for Xbox Game Pass owners and supporters.
