NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind recent Mortal Kombat games, is moving on to a new project.
In Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate ’s official Twitter page, folks at NetherRealm Studios tweeted that support for the game has officially come to an end. It cited that the company is now focusing on its “next project.”
This means no more DLCs in the future, though bug fixes and stability updates might still roll out if needed.
The last DLC for MK 11 came in November 2020, wherein developers consolidated all previously released DLC characters into one huge update - adding 13 characters to the roster.
It is admirable that developers are hard at work in making the game a huge success. The last major update was back in May that brought balancing changes to playable characters, including the nerf to Shiva and Cetrion, the buff to Rambo and Robocop, among others.
While this is sad news for the fans, some people have expressed their gratitude to the devs. User @ej_hamlet tweeted their appreciation for the company’s honesty and their excitement for what’s to come.
Another user tweeted that while they are thankful that the company released a statement about its future decisions, they are sad that support for the game has ended.
Possible New Project
Now, you might be asking what NetherRealm Studios is going to tackle next. Although no official statement regarding the matter, some people have speculated that the developers are working on a new Marvel fighting game.
On May 4, Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios, re-tweeted Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s tweet. He said that Gunn was able to work on both DC and Marvel movies at the same time. But what’s interesting is that the creative director added a “thinking” emoji at the end of his tweet.
The thinking emoji seems insignificant on its own. But in this context, it may suggest that Boon had some things in mind. Unsurprisingly, some people went wild after the re-tweet.
User @MK12Ash said that Boon has just given it away, while others said that he is possibly revealing a new Marvel vs. DC fighting game in the works.
User @Kitana_Prime, a partnered Twitch streamer, replied to Boon’s tweet: ”Listen Ed, this is a GUARDIANS post. We love you. I love you. You can be the greatest troll ever, but IF THIS GAME EXISTS AND STAR LORD ISNT IN IT,” they said.
Whatever NetherRealm Studios is working on at this point, it will be up to the company to make an official announcement. One thing is for sure, though, and that is Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will no longer receive new content. How do you feel about this news?
