The first teaser trailer for The Mummy has arrived and it’s approximately as bland as the teaser trailer tease that came out last week.
Since the trailer for The Mummy is mainly about Tom Cruise bouncing around an airplane (plus his famous running!), director Alex Kurtzman explained the plan for The Mummy and the upcoming slate of Universal Monster movies.
But first, watch this and pay attention to how Tom Cruise, um, dies:
Yes, Tom Cruise dies in The Mummy and comes back to life. According to Screen Rant, he’s immortal now.
But what about Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll? What’s his deal? How are they tying all these movies together?
According to Kurtzman:
“In looking to figure out how to place The Mummy in a larger context and setting up this organisation that has actually been dealing with monsters for longer than any of us have been around, it became clear that we needed somebody to be the voice of that organisation. The next thought was like, ‘Well, it could be Joe McGillicuddy, or we could actually go into another character that makes sense organically.’ It was a real point of conversation with Tom.”
Dr. Jekyll is in charge of something called “The Prodigium,” a secret vault of monster artifacts. That makes him the Nick Fury of the Universal Monsters shared universe, which is soon to include The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man and a new Frankenstein movie.
So will Dr. Jekyll hulk out in this one? Or will that have to wait for a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde solo film? We’ll find out June 9, 2017.
