NASA has just released an app for the Apple TV that allows you watch the live stream from the International Space Station as it falls around the Earth at 17,150 mph. You can download the app via the tvOS Store on any fourth generation Apple TV.
“The NASA app has been a fantastic way for the public to experience the excitement of space exploration from their mobile devices,” said David Weaver, NASA associate administrator for Communications. “Now, users with the latest Apple TV can explore and enjoy our remarkable images, videos, mission information, NASA Television and more on the big screen with the whole family.”
The NASA TV app has been available for Android, iOS and Fire OS devices for some time now — in fact, it’s been downloaded 17 millions times, according to the press release NASA put out to inaugurate the release of the tvOS version — but now Apple TV users can partake in the spacefaring fun as well.
You can keep up to date with the latest mission information with the NASA TV app, and listen to the Third Rock internet streaming radio. It seems astronauts enjoy indie pop.
The NASA TV app also includes on demand content, including videos and over 15,000 images you can slideshow through to your heart’s content, as well as both 2D/3D satellite tracking maps. The latter feature is pretty cool if you’ve never played around with it before: the app will notify when you have a chance to look up and see the ISS streak past in the night sky.
Make sure to keep your head up though: the ISS goes so fast you’ll only have a couple seconds to spot the little star-like glimmer before it’s gone.
