The upcoming mainline Battlefield game is getting some special treatment from EA. After the failure of Battlefield 5, the giant publisher wants to make sure that the long-running franchise is back on track.
Battlefield 6 is currently in development at EA DICE and is planned for release in late 2021. However, things may not be as simple. According to Laura Miele, Chief Studios Officer at EA, the development of the game has suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why the Need for Speed developer, Criterion Games, will now help in development.
Criterion’s own game, the upcoming Need for Speed has been delayed by a year, Miele said.
“[Battlefield] is shaping up great, the team has been working incredibly hard, they pushed hard last year, and yes, we have been working from home. And it’s hard; it’s hard to make games from home, and the [EA DICE] team is fatigued a bit," Miele told Polygon.
It seems like EA is hell-bent on releasing the next Battlefield game in the holiday release window. That makes sense as games that are released in Q4 always perform well, and Battlefield is a bigger IP for EA than NFS.
Miele further claimed that NFS is not being taken away from Criterion. They are still the sole developer of the franchise. Miele clarified that the developer owns the franchise, which led to a remaster. Anything going on within the NFS brand is a responsibility of Criterion. Thus, they have the power to decide on everything about the game.
There is not a lot of information available on Battlefield 6. But we do know that the game will support 128 player mode and unscripted destruction, while some rumors suggest that there will be a free battle royale mode, much like Call of Duty Warzone. Given that the game will launch this year, we should be ready for an announcement in the coming months.
