The worst kept secret is finally confirmed: BioWare is developing another Dragon Age game. And if you’re like us, you’re still not over the Solas betrayal from Dragon Age: Inquisition . Just writing that sentence stings a bit.
If you’re looking for details like how far after the Inquisition does it take place or who’s the new protagonist in the new Dragon Age game, you’ll be waiting for a while. The good news is the game’s writer, Alexis Kennedy, teased details about the next Dragon Age game during an interview with Eurogamer. Kennedy is just glad he doesn’t have to keep the “secret” anymore.
"There are huge differences between all of that and what I'm working on at BioWare," Kennedy told Eurogamer, "which I can now legitimately say is in the Dragon Age franchise, although it has been known for a while. Notionally it was a secret but, because of who I was working with, everyone who cared knew. And then the day I started, Mark Darrah [executive producer of the Dragon Age franchise] tweeted saying 'welcome to the Dragon Age franchise,’ so I thought, well, I guess that's official now then."
Dragon Age: Inquisition left off with the revelation of Solas actually being Fen'Harel, a god whose betrayal of the elven people caused chaos in the world. Solas has since wandered the Fade in hopes to restore balance in the world. If you were an female elven Inquisitor, your romance with Solas would lead to another heartbreaking betrayal.
If we were to guess what’s next in the franchise, it seems like traveling to Dorian’s homeland of Tevinter would be a natural next step. Dorian’s new claim to power and romance with Iron Bull could lead into a Qunari storyline, too. The Qun played a big role in the Trespasser DLC since they wanted to take down Solas just as much as Inquisitor.
Unfortunately, there’s really no telling what BioWare has planned for Dragon Age . Kennedy didn’t comment on how far he’s come along in the writing process or how heavily involved he’s in the project, but he did tell Eurogamer he’s enjoying the challenges BioWare has thrown his way.
"Something I've enjoyed at BioWare - possibly because I'm a masochist - is the constraints," Kennedy said. "I knew they were constrained by being fully voice-acted. But I hadn't realised how much of a constraint it is. It's much easier to breeze through [writing] huge quantities of text when you don't have to worry about it being voiced. It's very difficult to put the player's name in dialogue - which is why you have the names Shepard and Ryder in Mass Effect , or the title of Inquisitor."
Even though we have a love-hate relationship with Solas, we do want to know what Fen'Harel has planned for Thedas. He’s a powerful being and we’re certain we’ll be seeing him in the next Dragon Age game. What other characters would you like to see return in the next Dragon Age title?
