Logan’s release date is quickly approaching and a new, graphic, promo shows how Laura Kinney became X-23. The footage shows a dark lab, with blood soaked into an operating chair and DNA on computer screens. A group of doctors operates on Laura’s hands and legs while she’s passed out. You can see the metal talons they are inserting sprawled across the operating table. Laura wakes up, lifting her bandaged hands and screaming. She’s put in a jail cell, where’s she uses her new claws to cut herself.
This may be the most disturbing footage we’ve seen thus far, more so than the trailers where X-23 ruthlessly kills countless people. Footage of the experiments on Wolverine were certainly unsettling as well, but Laura’s young age takes it to another level.
X-23 is a clone created by Dr. Martin Sutter using a partial genetic sample of Wolverine (aka Weapon X) DNA. The post-credits scene of X-Men:Apocalypse teased her origins and connection to Nathaniel Essex, one of the earliest scientists involved in the Weapon X program responsible for creating Wolverine. In the scene from Apocalypse, a man retrieves vials of leftover Wolverine blood labelled Weapon X and puts them in a briefcase labelled ESSEX CORP. What we are seeing in this new teaser could be the outcome of experiments with those vials of Wolverine’s blood.
