More The Lord of the Rings franchise adaptations are on the horizon, as developers Private Division and Weta Workshop officially announced a new game set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, with the title and release date to be revealed at a later date. This makes it the second The Lord of the Rings game confirmed to arrive in the future, the first being Nacon’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was recently announced to be delayed by a few months.
The new The Lord of the Rings game will be developed by Weta Workshop’s interactive game division, and published by Private Division. Private Division head Michael Worosz stated in a press release.
“We are thrilled to partner with Weta Workshop to publish a game set in such an extraordinary and celebrated universe. The Lord of the Rings IP is home to so many remarkable stories, and no entity is better equipped than the team at Weta Workshop to create a distinctive, new Middle-earth gaming experience.”
It’s not yet known what kind of game this new The Lord of the Rings experience will be, except that this is Weta Workshop’s first major undertaking in the video game space. The company is best known for producing the props and visual effects for the original The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, still renowned today as one of the best trilogies in movie history.
Even today, with various advancements in VFX and post-production, The Lord of the Rings film trilogy has stood the test of time with timeless visual effects that blend seamlessly with the practical effects they boast. If Weta Workshop can apply this to its video games, this next The Lord of the Rings game could be something very special indeed.
Before The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and this new unannounced title, the franchise has been very well received in the video game space thanks to the Middle-earth series of games. Taking place sometime before the film trilogy, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War are open-world games where a fallen Ranger named Talion sows chaos amongst the ranks of Sauron and his legion of Orcs.
