Invitations went out earlier this week for the closed alpha testing of a new Plants vs. Zombies shooter game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to the invite, the upcoming game is going to be developed by the team behind the Garden Warfare games, and is likely to be a sequel to the shooting game franchise.
Codenamed "Picnic", the new game will have a closed alpha test from August 1 to August 6, at least according to the emails sent out by EA. We don't know all that much at the moment - EA is still trying to keep a lot of the relevant information under wraps - but we do know that the new Plants vs. Zombies game will have at least two gameplay modes available. The modes are called Turf Takeover and Team Vanquish, which sound awfully similar to popular shooter game modes King of the Hill and Team Deathmatch.
News of the upcoming Plants vs. Zombies shooter is unsurprising, especially considering EA's announcement last February detailing plans to add to the Plants vs. Zombies and Need For Speed intellectual properties. So far, EA has released two Plants vs. Zombies shooting games - Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare, which came out in 2010, and the sequel, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, which launched back in 2016. Both titles were definitely positively received, which is probably why Garden Warfare 3 is in the works.
Plants vs. Zombies is a zombie and plant-themed tower defense-style game originally developed by PopCap for mobile devices. Electronic Arts, in partnership with PopCap, then developed and published the Garden Warfare games, shooter-type video games based on the Plants vs. Zombies world. Just last week, PopCap launched Plants vs Zombies 3 for mobile devices, which was well-received by the gaming community.
