We already know there will be no new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016, the first year there hasn’t been at least one new entry since the series started in 2007. Now it seems Ubisoft may not even have a new game for 2017.
In an interview with GameSpot, Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot said the next Assassin’s Creed game will release when it is ready. “ What we saw in the development of the next Assassin's Creed] was that we had an opportunity to take it to another level,” Guillemot told GameSpot. “So we said we'll take all the time it takes to make the experience fantastic. It was feasible because we have other games. There's a huge potential in this game to revolutionise the IP, so we said, ‘Let's make sure we change our model so we have more time and that we can bring back a greater experience.’"
When asked if that means we’ll see a 2017 release, Guillemot said “It will be back when it's ready. That's when we feel we have something there.”
Even though Guillemot has said it could come after 2017, that doesn’t mean it will. The game will release when it’s ready, but that could still very easily be next year. All we know for certain is the developers want to take the proper time on this game and not rush it out to fit a yearly deadline.
Guillemot said he wants to really shake up the franchise with the next release. GameSpot noted that Assassin’s Creed 2 established the Ubisoft open-world formula now seen in many other games like the Far Cry series and The Division. When asked if this would be another huge step forward or a simple tweaking of mechanics, Guillemot responded with “It's difficult to say right now. You'll actually make up your mind on that when you see it.”
If you still want Assassin’s Creed action this year, be sure to check out Assassin’s Creed The Ezio Collection releasing for PS4 and Xbox One on Nov. 15. The Assassin’s Creed movie will also be coming to theaters this December.
