The next Battlefield game will reportedly have classes, focused maps, and a modern-day setting as it aims to return to its core foundations.

This comes after the 2021 futuristic sequel simply drove many longtime fans away from the franchise. Longtime Respawn head Vince Zampella said that Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 were the peak of the series.

He added that these two titles will be the games that the upcoming title in the franchise will aim to replicate and evolve. Zampella said that they have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is, do it amazingly well, and see where it goes from there.

The executive was previously the head of Infinity Ward back when Call of Duty: Modern War 1 and 2 surged in popularity. He also gave out a few features that fans can expect with the new Battlefield game, according to Kotaku.

The first is that the game will be set in the modern day and will not have 128-player maps. It will instead opt to have 64-player maps and move back to standard class loadouts instead of custom specialists.

Zampella said that he wasn't there for Battlefield 2042 and did not know what the rationale was for the game. He noted that the team opted to try something new, which was something that should be applauded.

Electronic Arts also revealed fresh details about the upcoming game, including its first official concept art. It suggests that ship-to-ship and helicopter combat will be part of the next Battlefield title, said IGN.

The concept also suggests that there could be natural disasters such as wildfires that players will have to keep in mind. Its grayish color scheme is reminiscent of Battlefield 4, which is one of the most popular titles in the series.

Battlefield 2042's Issues

All of the reveals point to the studio's goal of going back to its core moving forward. Zampella said that the 128-player maps did not make games really fun for players. He added that they are testing a lot of features right now to get things right.

Battlefield 2042 was originally launched in 2021 and was rife with various issues and problems. These include technical issues and questionable gameplay decisions. This led some to call it the "weakest Battlefield in some time."

Many players agreed with that statement and Battlefield 2042 soon became one of Steam's most negatively-reviewed games of all time, according to Eurogamer.
