The recent Pokémon Go craze and hype before the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Moon release in November has catapulted Nintendo to lead the July U.S. sales charts in both software and hardware, according to the NPD Group , which tracks video game sales in the U.S.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter Generations helped Nintendo’s sales in July by debuting at number one on the software charts for any console.
Nintendo is also attributing strong sales to the recent drop in price of the Nintendo 2DS, which has crossed the 2 million units sold mark in the U.S.
Pokémon Go has renewed interest in the core Pokémon games among casual players and that can be seen in the uptick of sales for Pokémon X and Y , as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Pokémon ORAS , which launched in November 2014, saw an 80 percent increase in sales for the month of July. In that same span, Pokémon X and Y saw an incredible 200 percent sales increase. X and Y was released back in October 2013.
The upcoming Sun and Moon (and its possible connection to X and Y ) is not lost on the Pokémon community, as the recent sales of older games demonstrates.
Nintendo also dominated the July software charts with five of the top 11 spots reserved for Nintendo games. The aforementioned Monster Hunter Generations was No. 1, Minecraft: Wii U Edition came in at No. 6, Pokémon Omega Ruby at No. 8, Alpha Sapphire at No. 10 and Kirby: Planet Robobot at No. 11.
Pokémon X and Y came in at No. 16 and 22, respectively.
