Some of the best Nintendo players from around the country have gathered in New York for the 2017 Nintendo World Championships, including special guest competitor, WWE Superstar Bayley.
Bayley was backed by the packed crowd at the Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, but could she ride on that enthusiasm to become the Champion? Here’s how it went down:
In the first round, the 24 NWC competitors duked it out in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . The round involved mastering Link’s shield surfing technique, where each competitor must race to the finish line without losing all their hearts in three minutes.
It was a tough race and Bayley didn’t fare very well as she struggled to get on her shield right out the gate. Still, she managed to hang on with half a heart remaining, but ultimately did not make it in three minutes.
Game 2 is Super Smash Bros.’ Home Run contest on the Wii U. Bayley first chose Roy, but had a hard time getting damage on the Sand Bag before settling at a score below 1000.
Her second attempt was with Bowser, but the wrestler couldn’t get a swing off before time expired.
After the two games, Bayley was in 20th.
Game 3 was the Diggernaut Encounter from Metroid: Samus Returns . The competitors had six minutes to get through the puzzle without being killed by the Diggernaut. Those who finished in under three minutes received 24 points, while those who completed before six minutes received 12 points. Finally, challengers that failed to finish the puzzle are left with zero points.
Bayley had trouble right off the back and died twice in the first 20 seconds. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recover and didn’t finish, which ended her chances in the Nintendo World Championship.
Still, the WWE Superstar was gracious to be invited to the event:
“Thank you to Nintendo and everyone for having me here,” Bayley said to the raucous crowd. “This is different from what I’m used to, the competition I’m used to is being one-on-one in the ring. Congratulations to everyone for making it this far. I got to meet a lot of cool people and thank you guys for having me.”
