The big story arc when Once Upon a Time season 5 arrives this spring is the Underworld. While Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is headed there to save Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), there could be a chance that other characters from the afterlife will be returning to Storybrooke.
“It’s a place that, once they get there, they’re going to discover that possibly some of these people can be saved and brought out of there, because maybe they’re misplaced in this world,” said Josh Dallas, who plays Charming, to Entertainment Weekly.
Is Dallas hinting that Hook won’t be the only character to return from the Underworld? A second chance is a repeating theme for the show (case in point: Regina/The Evil Queen) so perhaps some previously nefarious characters will be making a comeback.
“We’re going to meet some people down there that maybe you don’t expect or you haven’t seen in quite a while — maybe a family member of David’s we might see down there,” told Dallas to Entertainment Weekly. “There is definitely a particular person down there for David that he’s going to come across, and Mary Margaret will come across that person too.”
The family member in question is Charming’s deceased twin brother. Also appearing are: Prince Henry (Tony Perez), Sidney Glass (Giancarlo Esposito), The Blind Witch (Emma Caulfield), Peter Pan (Robbie Kay), Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) and Milah (Rachel Shelley).
Previously, producer Edward Kitsis explained that the purpose of the Underworld is closure.
“The second half is a lot about them getting closure on their pasts and how the past comes to haunt you,” Kitsis said to The Hollywood Reporter, while specifying that the underworld is not hell.
Once Upon A Time returns on March 6, which also marks the show’s 100th episode, on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
