The original Diablo game is now available on digital storefront GOG for $9.99. Other classic Blizzard titles, including games from the Warcraft franchise, are also set to arrive on the premiere service for old games.
Teaming up with the Blizzard, GOG is re-releasing the famous video game title and making them compatible with modern systems. For the first time in years, players can enjoy the cult classic title as it was in 1996 - almost 23 years ago. Blizzard is one of the largest game development companies in the world, but its huge success in the industry is all thanks to games like Diablo that put the developer on the map.
Diablo can be purchased from the GOG store for only $9.99, and gives players two versions to choose from: the original 1996 title exactly as it was over 20 years ago with a classic version of the Battle.net matchmaking service courtesy of Blizzard, and new and improved version, which is compatible with Windows 10 and includes a myriad of bug fixes and improvements.
GOG (short for Good Old Games) is well-known for bringing back classic and well-loved titles and making them compatible with the latest systems and hardware. While GOG also offers plenty of new and upcoming video game titles, its unique service is that it allows folks to play all of the great classics without the hassle of compatibility issues brought about by rapidly-changing technology. After all, you can’t really expect a game that came out in 1996 for Windows 95/NT machines with a total of 8MB of RAM to still work perfectly on Windows 10 machines with 16GB of RAM. That’s 2000 times more bytes! Popular GOG revivals include the text-based RPG franchise Zork, the father of the open-world RPG genre Ultima, and now, the original action RPG Diablo.
In addition to Diablo, the Blizzard-GOG partnership is expected to re-release other classic titles, including Blizzard’s first ever game, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, which originally released in 1994. The sequel, Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, is also expected to be available on GOG soon.
