The 88th Academy Awards have finally arrived, and with them, our predictions. As it usually goes with award shows, there are a number of narratives surrounding this year’s Oscars.
With comedian Chris Rock hosting, it will be impossible to ignore yet another controversy surrounding the Oscar nominees. For the second year in a row, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite circulated around social media as the nominations were revealed. Minority actors and filmmakers, particularly African-Americans, were shut-out from this year’s race. As a minority himself, how will Rock address the debate? Make jokes, take it seriously or, choose not the mention it all?
Sylvester Stallone’s nomination as Best Supporting Actor in Creed presents a more lighthearted story. The famed star of Rocky came back and played the same role with bravado after 39 years. Him winning the Oscar would certainly be a fairytale comeback.
But even more so than Stallone, all eyes will be on Leonardo DiCaprio at tonight’s Oscars. The 41-year-old actor has starred in a number of critically acclaimed films, but has yet to win a single Academy Award. Can he finally break the deadlock for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant?
