Overwatch is getting a new update that will improve loot boxes and allow players to more easily save their best highlights from games. This news comes from a video uploaded to the official Overwatch YouTube channel.
In the video, game director Jeff Kaplan describes many of the changes players can expect to see right now on the PTR. No mention was made as to when the tweaks will go live on regular servers.
The first topic Kaplan talks about are the game’s highlights. Previously, Overwatch would save your top highlights, but there was a chance you’d lose them if you turned off your console or PC. “Under the new system, the top five highlights will always be there for 24 hours,” Kaplan said.
A new feature called “Recently Captured” will also be added. “We’ve made it so you can either bind a key to capture a highlight or combine multiple keys on PC to capture multiple highlights,” said Kaplan. Once the match is over, those highlights you marked will go to the Recently Captured section of your profile. 32 highlights can be saved at once in the Recently Captured area.
If you run out of space with all of your captures, Blizzard will allow players to save highlights as a separate video. “What’s really cool about this is it gives you different options,” Kaplan said in the video. “So if you’re on a console, it will default to whatever options your console defaults to to save those video files. Those video files will go to whatever media library you use, whether that is the Xbox media library or the PlayStation media library.”
On PC, the files get exported to its own directory in Windows. PC gamers also have the ability to save highlights in 4k and at 60fps (if your computer can handle that in the first place).
Kaplan said Blizzard will also make significant changes to loot boxes. “One of the things we’re going to do is drastically reduce the rate of duplicates that you’ll get out of any loot box,” he said. While this will make getting new items and skins much easier, it means you’ll also be earning them much faster.
“To compensate for this, we’re going to increase the amount of credits you get out of loot boxes,” said Kaplan. Credit intake will be “at least the same, if not more” for players once the changes go live.
“You have to keep in mind that the system doesn’t have infinite content,” said Kaplan. “So at some point, you’re obviously going to get duplicate items. We think the change should be very drastic and significant and feel fantastic.”
