It looks like there’s about to be some custom-created Pac-Man levels coming our way, according to a trademark filing found on the European Union Intellectual Property Office website. Bandai Namco has filed to trademark the name Pac-Man Maker.
While that’s all the information we have to go on, the title Pac-Man Maker does make it seem like the plan is to create a Super Mario Maker for everyone’s favorite yellow circle. Seeing as how Pac-Man has gone through about as many phases as Mario, this could easily allow players to create a retro-inspired stage, a Ms. Pac-Man level or maybe even some sort of 3D thing, like from Pac-Man World.
That being said, this is just a trademark filing. It could mean absolutely nothing other than Namco Bandai wanted to hold onto the name. However, two other trademark filings were also found from Namco Bandai, one for Code Vein and one for Storm Wings. If the company is filing all of these trademarks now, it seems likely they will all turn into something later.
No other details, like a release date or even what platform the game is for, are included in the filing. The smart play for Bandai Namco would be to get Pac-Man Maker onto just about every platform possible. Super Mario Maker was a very successful release with over 3 million copies sold, and was limited to only being on the Wii U (and later 3DS). Getting the same formula of a game onto PC, PS4 and Xbox One could end up huge.
As for when to expect an announcement from Bandai Namco, E3 is a few short months away. Expect to hear an announcement in the lead-up to E3, with some gameplay footage or possibly a hands-on demo available at the video game showcase in June.
