Publisher Bandai Namco and developer NOW PRODUCTION have unveiled the opening movie for Pac-Man World Re-Pac, the 3D platformer remake launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on August 26. The new opening movie is vastly different from the original in terms of its narrative, but it does show the circumstances that will lead to Pac-Man setting out on his journey. Check out the opening movie for Pac-Man World Re-Pac below.
Players who have played through the OG Pac-Man World game will know that this new opening movie is very different from what the original was. To compare, the original featured weirder and wackier nabbing scenes for members of the Pac family, usually hinting at the world where you will find the members once you go out to save them. The nabbers were also vastly different, as with this new opening movie the Ghosts themselves carried out all the kidnappings as opposed to using different henchmen related to whatever world the Pac member of the family will find themselves on.
The biggest shame is the ending, however, as it fully cuts out that nostalgic scream from Pac-Man at the end when he discovers that his family has been taken. In the new opening movie, the Ghosts just disappear with the family members before leaving a hint that it was them who did it, scattering various posters referring to Ghost Island and showing off a mechanical Pac-Man enemy.
Opening movies aside, Pac-Man World Re-Pac is essentially a modernized remake of Pac-Man World, the 1999-released 3D platformer on the original PlayStation. Pac-Man World came at a time when every developer outside of Nintendo was trying to capture the magical success that was kicked off by Super Mario 64. Pac-Man World was both a critical and commercial success, selling over 1.25 million copies and spawning two direct sequels: Pac-Man World 2 and Pac-Man World 3. The series also spawned a kart spinoff that competes with Mario Kart called Pac-Man World Rally.
As for features, Pac-Man World Re-Pac will include modernized graphics but keep most of its gameplay design intact. Pac-Man must challenge the six areas of Ghost Island to save his family and with the aid of his iconic move set and the fruit power-ups.
