Every year, renowned Japanese studio ATLUS holds a consumer survey concerning its properties. This year was a bit more popular than the others, as the consumer survey asked which of its games fans want the remake treatment for, with 10 making the charts. To the surprise of very few, Persona games have made it to the top four, with Persona 3 and Persona 2 (both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment) making it to the top. Here’s the complete list, as compiled and translated by another publication:
- (1) Persona 3 (Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 3 Portable) – 78.9%
- (1) Persona 2: Innocent Sin / Persona 2: Eternal Punishment – 78.9%
- (3) Revelations: Persona – 76.3%
- (4) Persona 4 (Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden) – 74.8%
- (5) Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha series – 72.1%
- (6) Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers – 69.5%
- (7) Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse – 66.7%
- (8) Shin Megami Tensei IV – 65.3%
- (9) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga series – 62.4%
- (10) Etrian Odyssey series – 58%
Persona 3 and Persona 2 topping the results is a no-brainer amongst the series’ biggest fans. With the worldwide success of Persona 5, it makes sense that players want to experience earlier titles in the series but with a more modern take that Persona 5 has introduced. It’s probably the reason why Revelations: Persona claimed the third spot, as it’s the first game in the series and one that would be prime for a remake/remaster for a new audience.
Persona games topping the results prove once and for all that the subseries has firmly overtaken Shin Megami Tensei itself as ATLUS’ most popular franchise.
If the results tell us anything, it appears that ATLUS is well aware of Persona’s overall popularity, and is now a focal point for the developer. Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 are all gearing up for their re-releases across all platforms, and if the sales figures are good enough, we could see remakes of any of the top games in the survey in the future.
In the end, a big shame for Etrian Odyssey fans like me.
