The mysterious and highly-anticipated Persona 5 S has been announced yesterday, and in one fell swoop it killed the hopes of Switch owners looking to own Persona 5.
As it turns out, the much-awaited Persona 5 S isn’t a direct port of the critically acclaimed JRPG Persona 5, exclusive to the PlayStation 4; rather, it’s a musou, or a genre inspired by Dynasty Warriors, a hack-and-slash title that sees you controlling various points on a map while killing hundreds of enemies on screen at any given time. The official title for this Persona game is now Persona 5 Scramble: Phantom Strikers, which will be made available to both the PlayStation 4 and – to add some salt to the wounds – the Nintendo Switch, much to chagrin of Switch fans waiting for the Persona 5 port. You can see the trailer for yourself below.
The game sees you playing as Joker, along with other characters from Persona 5 as you engage hordes of enemies on the screen. The trailer showed off some gameplay, in which Joker uses his unique gunplay ability while in combat. Just like other musou titles, like Hyrule Warriors, Persona 5 Scramble: Phantom Strikers is expected to put its own spin and – pun intended – persona, on the genre, presumably utilizing Persona 5’s unique art style and combat.
Naturally, seeing as there is a section of Nintendo Switch owners who are looking forward to what they presumed was a Switch port for Persona 5 Scramble: Phantom Strikers, the trailer was met with some backlash. At the time of this writing, the trailer sits at 5.3K dislikes versus 14K likes.
On one hand it’s easy to understand the frustration of this subset of fans, it baffles the mind how hyped they were over what at best was an uncertain title. Sure, Joker was included in Smash Bros., but that doesn’t mean that a Persona 5 port for the Switch is all but confirmed. I will give some props to Atlus teasing it though, and cleverly using the S in the title as a way to drum up hype.
Having said that, we may still end up seeing a Persona 5 port for the Switch, although it would be much better to not expect anything at this point and inevitably set yourself up for disappointment once it doesn’t happen.
Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, as of now, doesn’t have a release date. It is set to be released on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch.
