The Incredibles is an exemplary Pixar film, a flawless children’s adventure and a smart send-up of pop culture and superhero genre films. It’s earnest, heartwarming and visually resplendent. Needless to say, I am one of the countless fans that have been eagerly awaiting its long-anticipated sequel ever since the first film’s release nearly 13 years ago. Well comrades, we’ve got a teaser and a release date.
It ain’t much, but it’ll do for now. The return of Michael Giacchino’s classic score is enough to resuscitate my excitement.
We’ve known for quite some time that the film will take place directly after the events of the first film, with the family still on edge about little Jack’s developing powers. The story will follow Bob as he braves the day-to-day struggles of fatherhood while Helen goes on an adventure of her own.
Director Ryan Bird has been mulling over a sequel since 2013, stating to The Hollywood Reporter: "I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another Incredibles film, and if I can get 'em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that."
Judging by the considerable time gap that separates this sequel from its predecessor, I’m going to assume Brad as got something good on his hands. In the years following The Incredibles release, Pixar is no longer the do-no-wrong studio they once were, but they’re pretty damn close. When your worst films are Cars 2 and The Good Dinosaur in a nearly two-decade long run, quality control isn’t exactly a concern.
I have no reason to believe The Incredibles 2 won’t be able to summon the magic from the original. My man Bird is back in the director's chair, along with the cast Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Samuel L. Jackson. It’s showtime.
