The PS4 Pro isn’t even a year old and developers are already looking forward to Sony’s next console. While we have no idea what a potential PlayStation 5 will be like, Polyphony CEO Kazunori Yamauchi thinks the console will be outputting graphics at 8K.
In an interview with Australian site Finder, Yamauchi mentioned how the company is future-proofing its latest game, Gran Turismo Sport. When discussing the game’s development, Yamauchi said “ It’s [Gran Turismo Sport] over-specced for PS4 Pro. So we are building for future versions of the console rather than the one we see today."
When asked to follow up on that statement, Yamauchi said “I think it would be no problem to run it at 8K even.”
Obviously, this does not confirm that the PlayStation 5 will run in 8K. This is a CEO saying Gran Turismo Sport can run at 8K. However, if anyone knew what to expect for the next console from Sony, it would be the CEO of a first-party studio.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a PS5. Back in June, Sony Interactive Entertainment of America President Shawn Layden confirmed the company would be making a new console next instead of another iteration on the PS4 and PS4 Pro, but said any news or formal announcements would be some time from now.
Realistically, a PS5 wouldn’t be coming until around 2021 or later. There is a seven-year gap between the release of the PS3 and PS4, meaning there still is four more years to go with the PS4 operating on that schedule. However, the release of the PS4 Pro may extend this generation even longer.
What’s curious is Yamauchi is talking about future consoles so early. Realistically, Gran Turismo Sport will be an “older” game when the PS5 eventually releases. While it’s not a bad idea to future-proof your games, the timing seems strange to even bring up “future versions of the console.”
