Transmission, the quintessential BitTorrent client for Mac OS X, has been updated for the first time since 2014. The open-source torrent client also works out of the box on a variety of systems, including Ubuntu, Fedora and Puppy Linux, but can be installed on Windows with a tiny bit of elbow grease.
Transmission version 2.90 officially drops support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard (version 10.6), but fixes a couple bugs the torrent client had on Mac OS X El Capitan (version 10.11), as well updating the design of the UI. Transmission users will now be able to download files from HTTP servers, as well as scrape potential URIs from the clipboard automatically.
Other fixes include moving away from building Transmission-cli by default, as the daemon has long been depreciated, and improvements to building Transmission for use on Windows. Support for Windows XP and 2003 has been dropped, with only Windows Vista or later being supported.
The Web Client of Transmission has been updated to work with jQuery 1.11.2 and jQueryUI 1.11.4 behind the scenes, and it will jQueryUI menus are now being used instead of custom built ones. The Web Client now supports the “Resume Now” option for queued torrent files.
Because Transmission is open-source, it doesn’t have the same desktop ads that can be seen in privately developed clients like uTorrent. To install the new version Transmission, click here to download the client for your system or update the app via the file menu if you have a previous version installed.
Softpedia was the first to notice that a new update had been released for Transmission.
