With the Power Rangers movie reboot releasing March 24, there are bound to be changes to the source material to bring the teenagers with attitude to the present day. One aspect that has some fans up in arms is the way Goldar is presented.
Goldar, one of Rita Repulsa’s most recognizable underlings in the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers show, has been reduced to what seems like a giant gold machine monster… thing.
It’s not very clear what Goldar is in the Power Rangers movie but Entertainment Weekly sat down with Director Dean Israelite and Production Designer Andrew Menzies about Goldar’s redesign for the upcoming film.
“Dean and I talked about him being faceless and intimidating and characterless,” Menzies said. “He’s an extension of Rita that’s unstoppable.”
According to the EW piece, Israelite wanted Goldar to be a kaiju-like beast that would be a physical manifestation of Rita’s evil, instead of just a villain with a personality. The Power Rangers creative team modeled Goldar’s look after a chocolate fountain with a melting form that never takes shape.
“I think as humans we always search for character in a face, and if it’s always shifting and changing, it becomes scary,” Menzies said. “If it moved like chocolate and kept flowing, you could never put your finger on it.”
“There’s something very beautiful about him,” Israelite explained. “All of the negative space that’s constantly in Goldar’s design feels very eerie, but on the other hand, he’s a kinetic sculpture.”
From the looks of the trailers, it’s interesting choice for Goldar, and the explanation of the redesign may not go over well with hardcore fans, but they’ll just have to wait and see how it all comes together.
Power Rangers will release in theaters March 24.
