The rebooted Power Rangers movie is set to morph into theaters in 2017 and the new iteration of the cherished television series looks to bring the teenagers with attitude into the next generation with a brand new cast.
Elizabeth Banks’ casting as the villainous Rita Repulsa was a surprise but it also brought a well-known name into a movie with relative unknowns, and now Entertainment Weekly has the first photo of Banks as Rita Repulsa.
Rita’s costume in the Power Rangers movie reboot is very different from the original character’s duds in the television series. Gone is the witch’s hat with the long horns, and the large gold gown. This version of Rita Repulsa has a lot more green and looks a lot more like another classic Power Rangers villain, Scorpina.
This new look for Rita was not lost on Banks as she explained how Rita plays into the rebooted Power Rangers Movie.
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” Banks tells PEOPLE . “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
Saban Entertainment's Power Rangers movie is set to release in 2017.
