Sony’s big PlayStation meeting on Wednesday revealed the launch of its PS4 Pro, formerly known as the PS4 Neo. The PS4 Pro is essentially an upgraded version of the PS4 hardware that will support a faster processor, better graphics and provide 4K resolution. Sony’s newest console also boasts HDR display capabilities, which will potentially enhance the 4K playing experience.
According to CNET , HDR (high dynamic range) affects a TV’s ability to display a wider range of colors at higher rates of contrast. HDR is meant to preserve details that may be lost due to your TV’s current display standards. To put it simply, HDR enhances the resolution, which is what a gamer would want to pair with a 4K game on the new PS4 Pro .
HDR is typically found in most 4K TVs in the market, but not all of them. Does this mean you need to run out and drop $2000 on a TV for a better gaming experience on the PS4 Pro? Probably not. If you’re fortunate enough to have a 4K TV, 4K games for the PS4 Pro will still look great, even if it doesn’t have the same vibrancy on your display.
Sony also announced Wednesday it has partnered with Netflix to provide 4K streaming of shows, but confirmed the PS4 Pro console won’t support 4K Blu-ray.
Basically, Sony promised gamers some fancy lookin’ sh*t with the PS4 Pro for $100 more than the regular PS4 price. You can get your hands on the PS4 Pro when it launches Nov. 10 at $399.99. If you’re not interested in 4K gaming, Sony also announced the PS4 Slim , essentially the older PS4 hardware in svelte new packaging, for $299.99.
