A Moon Shaped Pool , Radiohead’s new album, will be released on Spotify June 17, according to The Verge, who noticed Spotify updated the page for Radiohead and screenshotted the release announcement.
The statement, which says “Radiohead’s latest album A Moon Shaped Pool will be available here from 17th June. Come back then to listen,” doesn’t mention why Spotify was the last of the major streaming sites to offer A Moon Shaped Pool .
Currently, Radiohead’s newest album is available to stream on Tidal, Apple Music and Google Music, which are all paid services. It’s been offered by these streaming sites since May 8, when Radiohead released A Moon Shaped Pool for purchase on its own website and other digital stores. The Spotify release happens to coincide with the album’s physical release.
While nobody is quite sure why Radiohead decide to throw shade at Spotify, it may be because the service offers an ad-supported free tier, while the other music streaming platforms only offer free limited trials. Alternatively, it could because Thom Yorke has called Spotify “the last desperate fart of a dying corpse,” according to The Guardian.
“I feel like as musicians we need to fight the Spotify thing. I feel that in some ways what's happening in the mainstream is the last gasp of the old industry. Once that does finally die, which it will, something else will happen," said Yorke in an interview with Sopitas, a Mexico-based music site. "But it's all about how we change the way we listen to music, it's all about what happens next in terms of technology, in terms of how people talk to each other about music, and a lot of it could be really fucking bad.”
