Red Dead Redemption 2 was absent from the E3 press conference lineup, but new rumors from ComicBook.Com and WWG offer some hints about what players can expect from the game. According to the publication’s sources, Rockstar wants crossplay multiplayer between PS4 and Xbox One.
Quoting the outlet directly, “We’ve heard from multiple sources that Rockstar has recently been pursuing cross-platform multiplayer across Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Red Dead Redemption 2.” The information was first passed along in May from a source inside the studio that has offered correct information about reveals in the past.
Unfortunately, however, that’s all we know on the subject so far. There’s no word on how these discussions have progressed or if they’re still ongoing.
One thing that is certain, however, is that Rockstar seems to be betting big on the online features of this game. After all, it’s only an elite class of titles, like Minecraft and Rocket League, that go the extra mile to offer cross-platform features for their audiences. Provided these rumors are true, the implication here is that Rockstar intends for Red Dead online to be just as popular as those juggernauts. Given the wild success of Grand Theft Auto Online, the studio has good reason to be bullish about the prospects of its next big release.
If recent announcements made during E3 2017 are any indication, however, it’s possible Sony may not be willing to come to an agreement with Microsoft. Over the past few days, we’ve learned that discussions have been had to make Rocket League and Minecraft platform agnostic, but Sony is the only hardware maker of the big three that refuses to open its PlayStation Network to others. Especially since Red Dead Redemption 2 has a marketing and DLC partnership with the PS4, that closed-off stance may be hard to shake. That being said, given this game’s insane hype levels, an exception might be made too.
As with all rumors, this one should be taken with a grain of salt, but its author, Liam Robertson, has gained quite a reputation amongst insiders and gamers at large. In addition to his Red Dead Redemption 2 details, he’s also leaked correct information about Assassin’s Creed Origins and was highly publicized for his Nintendo Switch speculation. Perhaps most important of all, he’s a mastermind behind the Unseen64 web series that focuses on resurfacing canceled games. In other words, there’s plenty of reason to suspect Robertson would have accurate development contacts.
Despite being announced late last year and being initially slated for a 2017 release, we know almost nothing about Red Dead Redemption 2. When its delay was first made public last month, Rockstar offered up a single screenshot. Beyond that, we’ve only seen a tone piece teaser to get fans acquainted with its setting.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected for a late spring 2018 release on PS4 and Xbox One.
