Developer Remedy Entertainment confirmed that Control 2 will be an action RPG title but provides no further details about the sequel.

The studio first announced Control 2 as a sequel to its original surreal action-adventure in 2022. At the time, it said that the next entry in the franchise would be an "unexpected journey." Since then, Remedy Entertainment has not given fans much information about the sequel.

Control 2 Genre

But in August 2024, the company said that many "important" features in Control 2 are now in their "playable form." The confirmation of the sequel being an action RPG is the latest new information that fans have gotten about the game.

The news was shared by Remedy Entertainment through its Capital Markets Day presentation.

It was then followed up with a casual bullet point that was included in a social media post. This noted that Control Ultimate Edition will arrive on Feb. 12, 2024, for Mac, according to Eurogamer.

The studio also noted that Control will also be getting a free update that will be released early next year. This will reportedly unlock "some previously released content" that players hopefully have fun with.

The situation comes as Alan Wake 2 has reportedly sold more than 1.8 million units. Remedy Entertainment also said that it was relatively close to recouping the funds that it used to develop and market the sequel.

The major thing revealed in the company's recent presentation was that it plans to build out an interconnected universe. This will allegedly span out not only game franchises such as Alan Wake and Control but also film and TV shows, The Verge.

An Action RPG

Remedy Entertainment announced a partnership with Annapurna earlier this year amid efforts to bring its franchises to new mediums. Creative director Sam Lake added that this was still in its "very early steps."

The studio also revealed FBC: Firebreak last month, which is the company's first multiplayer game and is connected to its other titles. Lake said that these titles are all set in the same universe.

Many fans are now theorizing what the confirmation of Control 2 being an action RPG would entail for the sequel. Some believe that it could give players more freedom, such as control over protagonist Jesse's abilities, actions, and interactions.

If this is actually true, then it would mark a significant change for Remedy Entertainment. This is something that a lot of people believe in as Control has an "anything can happen as long as it's weird" setting, according to PCGamer.
