Early in 2016, co-creator Dan Harmon said Rick and Morty Season 3 episodes would premiere before the end of the year. Well, it’s very nearly Dec. 1 and there hasn’t been so much as a teaser trailer. And Harmon has pulled back from any concrete release date announcement, writing during a Reddit AMA, “I'm not authorized (nor would I really be able) to give you an airdate for season 3.”
It’s not looking good for a Season 3 premiere this year. Mr. Poopy Butthole’s prediction that new episodes of Rick and Morty wouldn’t arrive until March 2017 is starting to look closer and closer to the truth.
According to redditor PopDavid, who claims to work on Rick and Morty (maybe as a design assistant):
“They just finished writing all the scripts last week (as per a tweet by writer Dan Guterman) and only have full animation for one episode (as per another tweet by Guterman). Given that information, it should be pretty clear that any air date for this year is a long shot.”
While PopDavid’s posts suggest some inside knowledge of the production, his claims here are based on public information. In other words, it’s his judgment, based on an understanding of the typical production timeline, rather than a definitive knowledge of release date plans. “I can’t say it’s 100% not going to happen, more like 99%,” he said.
Still, if PopDavid is to be believed (reading through his comment history leads me to trust his self-characterization, for whatever that’s worth), Rick and Morty Season 3 is approaching the finish line. PopDavid even claims to have seen the Season 3 premiere, posting, “just watched 301. It. Is. NUTS!”
Hopefully we won’t have to wait until March and can see for ourselves sometime early in 2017.
